I recently bought a small homestead and using well water. I'm having major problems loosing my cycle after adding the fish. Never had this problem when using city water. What am I doing wrong or what can I do differently?

I wish the interweb was around 35 years ago when I started the fish hobby. I always did a fish in cycle and usually lost half of the stock, never had any chemicals besides dechlorinator, lost plenty of tank stocking due to ick. I would tear the tank down like twice a year and scrub everything and then wonder why most of my tank would die off within a day or two, always over fed, left lights on for 18 hours a day and never knew why I had a algae problem. Had no clue what a hospital/quarantine tank was, so any new fish I got would go straight into my display tank (pet shop water and all), and I usually picked up about ten fish at a time for the 29 gallon I had at the time (it was my first real tank after I broke the ten gallon I had).

I set one up beside my pond in a half barrel I cut up, weather was great and then went down to 7 degrees Celsius here just north of Toronto, Canada and then the week after went up to 40 degrees. All the guppies died and now today the weather is only 16 degrees at the end of July. Want to put more in there but the weather is hard to keep the water stable.

what is it like in a guppy pond ? I assume its much like a 1970s swingers orgy, lots of very flamboyantly dressed guys, bunch of not so pretty girls, everybody doin the hibbidy dibbidy and a fishy smell permeating the place............

My guppy fry love the springtails that get in to my pond. You can see them hoppng around on the surface and the fry chasing them.

My mutt guppies are so resilient, just last week our temps got up in the mid 90's and the pond was sitting at 94! Now i have an umbrella over mine to keep it cooler.

​ Hi @MichaelsFishRoom and ALL, im glad i saw this video. Im super new to this Aqua world. I have 1.5gallon tank. Very small tank compare to what I saw in the shop and other peoples tank setup. This is mainly for my 3yo kid. I don't like the bubbler creating splash. I don't have the top cover, more to open tank. However, I do use filter that has few holes like waterfall. I can see fine bubble break through the surface and reach to the middle of the tank. I guess I don't need bubbler anymore. Having the filter with the small waterfall is sufficient. I guess. Correct me If im wrong. My tank size, 22cm length x 17cm height x 15cm depth. Just want to make my kid happy, not traumatize him with death fish for now. I have 1 gold fish, 6 tetras (neon color). Sorry for lengthy message. I need validation at this point.

Goes to show that when the natural foods bring out colors our manufactured foods don't, the issue is the manufactured foods/ diets we feed. 🤔 Guppies have too many colors for them not to be "popping" all the time. 👍

I got a silenstream pf10 power filter and its so loud! I have no idea how to get rid of the noise, is there any advice you could give?

A quarter inch deep mulm has settled on top of a base of dirt then sand capped ten gallon tank. Should I leave it in there? The betta, cory catfish and guppies seem okay. I have a lot of little floating plants and two sponge filters.

In Australia we can get tri-sulfa tablets, they're a little pricey ($20 for 15 tablets) but in my experience, it hasn't worked with some of the diseases I've had. I have a Betta fish currently with a bacterial infection on his face, on first site we used a 10-day treatment of Tri-sulfa when the infection was minor, it did nothing for the type of bacteria I'm dealing with. By 10-days treatment the bacteria had only gotten out of control. So don't feel bad you can't get it, we can't get some US brands either. The local aquarium recommended the same treatment as your video, salt and Methene Blue (a product called Bactonex in Australia). Its been 5-days and I believe we've slowed the bacteria, possibly not completely yet but its doing more than tri-sulfa did. I want to ask a question about lowering the tank temperature. For a betta or tropical fish, lowering the temp affects their immune system and healing properties. Or is just much more beneficial to lower the temp due to slowing down the bad bacteria? Thanks,

I found a “hack” for filters for HOBs. Get some Florida Flag fish, when the filter needs to be replaced, drop them in the tank, and they will be clean in a couple days

Hey Michael, if you don't have RO water and want to get guppies that were grown in it, what sort of water can be used for their new tank? Distilled Water or just "treated" water?

Michael, you're looking so great! Slim, trim, and your skin is luminous! Whatever lifestyle stuff you're doing is definitely paying off. I know you've had some changes going on lately, but you're clearly thriving!

I saw an interesting talk on catfish. One of the things he said that caught my ear was to use bamboo instead of the terra cotta tubes. Reason being: as the bamboo softens it provides a first meak for the newly hatching pleco fry. Thought I'd share that. 🙂 And shekels are good! Cheers! ~Ron

Man that is some horrible news! I lost my dad to cancer 13 months ago. Cancer does not discriminate and often takes great people away from us. BUT it is super helpful and massively supportive to the family and the person going through literal hell to never lose hope. Maybe Keith ends up being that 1 out of thousands, that beats it. Stay positive and support him and his family as best as we can!
